The Hatch Integrated Electric Furnace Control System (IFC) is a state-of-the-art, modular, platform-independent and multi-level family of software modules designed to handle the specific operation, controls and protection of an electric furnace. The modular design provides flexibility for custom implementation to meet the needs of a multitude of process systems. The platform independent logic eliminates compatibility issues with any plant controls network.
Smelting concentrate in an electric furnace involves the interaction between the following process systems;
- the furnace
- the power distribution
- the material handling and furnace charging
- the cooling
- the off-gas handling
While any one of these systems can be controlled accurately on its own, the key to better production rates and lower operating costs is integrated control. By monitoring vital parameters in and around the furnace and making online heat balance calculations, feed rate can be continuously adjusted to the lower input per electrode, thus minimizing kilowatt hours per ton. Hot spots and bath temperature excursions are efficiently mitigated to protect the crucible and extend the life of the furnace.
- Reduced specific power consumption [kWh/t]
- Increased throughput
- Furnace crucible and electrical system protection
- Metal, slag and freeboard temperatures within tight ranges
- Hot spots mitigation
- Reduced electrode breakages
- Control system architecture
- Software customization and in-house testing
- Commissioning and start-up
- Process ramping and performance improvement tuning
- After-start-up assistance
- Technology transfer (including documentation, training and remote support)
