Hinged Ladle Lid

The Hatch Hinged Ladle Lid System is the most effective and inexpensive means of achieving an optimised hot ladle practice, while at the same time reducing energy cost and greenhouse gas emissions. The system is the only means of retaining heat in ladle refractories during critical time period; from start of casting throughout the tapping of the next heat of steel. The lid handling system has been proven to operate reliably, and require little maintenance.  Hatch’s continued innovation has led to the development of new, patent pending lid removal devices that improve the operation of the Hinged Ladle Lid system in previously difficult meltshops.
The ladle lid system is the only lid system that:

  • Removes the lid automatically when the ladle enters a processing or tapping station, and replaces the lid automatically when the process is complete.
  • Keeps the lid on the ladle during slag dumping or inspection.
  • Covers the Ladle while Porous plugs and slide gates are installed, keeping heat in the ladle refractory
  • Allows the ladle interior to be inspected with the lid still attached to the ladle, protecting the worker.
  • Acts as a shield for oxygen lancing of argon plugs and nozzles.

Benefits
The Hatch Technologies lid and handling system has stabilized the temperature/time profile of steel in the ladle for improved product consistency.  This results in:

  • Up to 30% increase in ladle refractory life, and improved BOF refractory life
  • Greatly reduced aluminum consumption, in some cases by up to 1/3 less
  • Reduced or eliminated pre-heater usage
  • Reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions
  • Reduced Ladle Furnace power usage
  • More consistent ladle temperature
  • Better steel quality, lower tap temperature
  • Longer ladle life
  • Higher yield, reduced fuel consumption
  • Higher caster productivity with fewer aborts
  • Lower caster breakout frequency
