Alcoa World Alumina selected Hatch as their EPCM alliance partner for their Western Australian region, consisting of three refineries in Western Australia (Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup Refineries). The alliance is responsible for managing and executing all engineering, procurement, and construction management for a A$150 million average annual capital expenditure program involving capital and maintenance projects.
Over 180 personnel are involved in the Alcoa Hatch Engineering Alliance across the three Alcoa Alumina Refineries, providing support on capital works programs for the Alumina Operations. This program covers projects ranging from minor site support to significant capital works.
Hatch is performing all EPCM work necessary to scope, design, and implement the program. The majority of these assignments will be brownfield projects to improve operating efficiency and capacity or for compliance with safety and environmental requirements. The initial phase of each EPCM project requires Hatch to work with plant operating personnel and reliability engineers to define problems, outline constraints, and identify projected results. Hatch will then prepare Preliminary Engineering, a Cost Estimate, Schedule, and Scoping Documents to support the submission of a Request for Authorization. Once the RFA is approved, Hatch is responsible for managing and performing detailed design, procurement, and construction management to meet budget, schedule, safety, and quality goals.
- Completed several de-bottlenecking projects at each refinery to increase production. The capital costs of these projects have ranged between $15 Million & $25 Million.
- Delivered $89 Million project to relocated bauxite load out facilities from obsolete Jarradale Minesite to Huntly Minesite for the Kwinana Refinery.
- The alliance delivers on average 50 capital projects above $100k per annum.
- Delivered fast tracked emissions reduction projects for the Wagerup Refinery. The highlights of these multi-million dollar projects include:
- installing equipment to capture odorous condensable and non-condensable from digestion and other parts of the refinery;
- fitting special low NOx burners to the gas-fired boilers in the refinery’s powerhouse;
- installing a new 100metre multi-flue smoke stack to reduce the impact of odour from the refinery’s calcination units.
- Completed several tailing dam projects at each refinery. The capital costs of these projects have ranged between $10 Million & $50 Million.
- Currently, an integrated Alcoa/alliance team is implementing the $124 Million McCoy Minesite relocation project.
