Sea-to-Sky Highway wins Gold

The Sea-to-Sky Highway is a vital transportation link between Vancouver, BC, and Whistler, one of the continent's best known ski resorts and a principal site of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In 2009 the project also won the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Engineering Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia, the association's highest honour.

In June 2005, the Macquarie Group (a global investment banking and diversified financial services provider) created the Sea-to-Sky Highway Investment Limited Partnership, which won a 25-year concession to design, build, operate and maintain the highway. Hatch Mott Macdonald is the Designer for Peter Kiewit Sons Co., who is the design-build contractor to the Partnership.

The scope of work, with a construction value of $500 million, included

  • new highway construction and repaving
  • highway realignment and widening from a two-lane to three-and four-lane configurations
  • new structures and bridge upgrades
  • environmental impact mitigation and enhancement
  • landscaping and site restoration.

The design started in June 2005 and final completion of the works was achieved in September 2009.
