Hatch wins Award of Merit for dewatering project
Hatch has won an Award of Merit in the Industrial category from the Consulting Engineers of Manitoba for the 777 mine dewatering project in Flin Flon, Manitoba.
Hatch was retained by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HudBay Minerals) to implement a new mine-dewatering scheme that would allow decommissioning of a deteriorating mine shaft for improving safety, while reducing risk and ongoing maintenance costs.
The project involved the design and construction of two tunnel plugs to separate the active mine from high water levels in the depleted mine.
Hatch designed the tunnel plugs and developed and monitored an extensive near-field and contact grouting procedure. Hatch used extensive experience in water-retaining hydroelectric structures to optimize a successful grouting program for the two tunnel plugs.
