Abstract
Radiant cooling chambers (RCC) are commonly used in Chilean copper smelters for off-gas cooling from process reactors such as Teniente and Peirce-Smith converters. The use of the RCC has been practiced in Chilean smelters since 1987 as they are effective and economically attractive. The RCC encompasses a pre-chamber to decelerate the gas flow and allow dust to settle, followed by a series of vertical ducts through which the gas flows for cooling, prior to further treatment in an acid plant, for example. Radiation heat transfer from the ducts to the ambient surrounds provides the mechanism for the cooling the gas. The main focus in the design and operation of the RCC is the optimization of the cooling areas.
