Abstract
The greatest challenge facing the global metallurgical industry in the first decade of the new millennium may be their ability to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions while maintaining economically viable production. In the magnesium industry, the use of sulfur hexafluoride gas contributes more to the total GHG emissions than any other single source including the generation of power by coal fired generating stations.
