Abstract
The application of the Direct Chill Casting process to magnesium and its alloys has a history as long as that for aluminum. Process efficiencies and process sophistication have however, lagged behind considerably, shielded behind a high product price and producer-fabricator stucture. More recent years have seen the major application of magnesium DC product become purity produtc; T-ingot and large rounds. Now the future promises a magnesium industry of significantly larger scale and more price competitive. The issues and challenges associated with the magnesium DC casting process are discussed and reviewed.
