Abstract
The American steel industry has made tremendous efforts in the past decade to drastically
reduce its operating costs and to comply with environmental requirements. Given this
situation, the promotion and acceptance of a "zero waste" philosophy in environmental
circles may appear to be an unwelcome challenge for the industry, involving more up front
exploratory work than continued operation with a pollution control/compliance philosophy.
