Abstract
The production of steel via the electric arc furnace (EAF) route continues to consume a large amount of electrical energy, and remains a focus for furnace optimisation. Between 1970 and 1995, EAF steelmaking increased from 18 to 38 million metric tons while basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking increased from 40 to 75 million metric tons over the same period.
