Hatch, in association with Hatch Mott MacDonald, is providing Owner’s Representative services to Ontario Power Generation for the construction of the $1.6-billion Niagara Tunnel facility project.
Diversion Tunnel
- 10.2 km long, up to 140 m beneath the city of Niagara Falls
- 14.44-m excavated diameter
- 500 m3/s diversion capacity
- 600-mm thick, unreinforced pre-stressed concrete final lining
- Waterproofing membrane
- Dewatering station and surface runoff structure
- Largest hard rock tunnel boring machine to date
- Difficult ground conditions – swelling rock, aggressive groundwater
- Intake constructed underneath existing barrage dam within river
- Deep intake channel excavation
Outlet Works
- 300-m long by 20-m deep outlet canal
- Outlet structure with downstream closure gate and surge shaft
Intake Works
- Demolition and replacement of upstream ice control wall
- Construction of new shore approach wall
Hatch’s scope includes preparation of design/build contract documents, design review, construction monitoring and contract administration.
The scope of services includes:
- Preparation of documents and evaluation of expression of interest
- Preparation of request for proposal documents
- Proposal evaluation and contract negotiation
- Review of design and construction submissions
- Monitoring of construction and environmental compliance
- Administration of contract
- Engineering to support design and construction reviews
The project is a design/build project with a partnering approach based on a Target Price Contract with schedule and cost incentives and disincentives.
