Gap Ridge Accommodation Village

Gap Ridge Accommodation VillageWoodside Energy’s Pluto Project included the construction of an on-shore LNG processing plant, located near the town of Karratha, Western Australia. A large ‘fly-in/fly-out’ and local workforce was involved in the construction of the plant. A shortage of single person’s accommodation in Karratha required the development of a purpose-built construction accommodation facility to support the project.

Woodside awarded an EPC contract to Ngarda Alliance to deliver the facility, known as Gap Ridge village. The village was originally designed to accommodate 1,500 persons, with capacity for expansion to 1,800, but has subsequently been expanded to accommodate 2,133 persons.

Scope of Services
Hatch completed a FEED study in 2007 which included development of concept designs and preliminary cost estimates for the Gap Ridge village. Hatch was subsequently commissioned by Ngarda Alliance to undertake the detailed design and documentation of the village.

Hatch’s scope of services included the following:

  • Site geotechnical investigation and analysis
  • Development of overall site layout plans including allowance for future expansion
  • Preparation of preliminary designs, floor plans, elevations, fit-outs and specifications for transportable accommodation rooms and central facilities buildings, including kitchen/diner, gyms, tavern and support buildings
  • Design and documentation of site earthworks and drainage
  • Structural design including cyclone tie-downs for transportable buildings
  • Services design including potable water, sewerage, fire water, lighting, power supply and electrical reticulation, and communications systems
  • Technical support during the construction phase of the project

Project Highlights

  • Cyclonic tie-down footings for transportable buildings were designed for expansive soils encountered on the site
  • Gap Ridge has one of the largest complexed transportable kitchen/diner facilities in Australia, with a floor area of over 4,000 m2 and with seating for 816 persons
  • The kitchen/diner facility was designed to withstand cyclonic conditions during complexing on site
  • The Gap Ridge village provides a high standard of accommodation to assist with the attraction of skilled workers to the Pluto Project. Feedback from village residents has been very positive
