Marine Facilities

The Marine Facilities group provides solutions to clients whose businesses require port and marine assets.

Forming part of Hatch Structural Assets, the group has undertaken projects throughout Australia, and around the world, particularly in Asia, often in remote locations . Most projects involve marine facilities to service bulk-materials handling and heavy-industrial operations. This includes offshore berths, container wharves, mooring and berthing dolphins, heavy-lift facilities, and landing-craft and barge facilities.

Services can generally be categorised into three groups:

Conceptual Studies
This work includes preliminary layout and planning of port facilities and detailed feasibility studies. Decisions made at the front end of a project can have far-reaching implications for the capital and operating costs of the facility and ultimately the financial feasibility of the project. To undertake this work effectively, we need a strong appreciation of how port operations interact with other business activities and disciplines.

Asset Management
Port facilities represent critical business operations with significant capital investment. The marine environment is extremely harsh in terms of rates of corrosion and the nature of environmental loads. Many current facilities nearing the end of their original design life require refurbishment or upgrading to suit changing operational requirements such as larger ship sizes.

The methodology for managing these assets involves the following:

  • auditing to determine physical condition
  • risk assessment to determine and rank hazards
  • performance assessment to assess operational capacity and future strategies and development
  • Financial assessment to determine the cost of alternative strategies.
Detailed Engineering Design
Hatch has undertaken the detailed engineering design and documentation of a range of maritime projects, either new facilities or modifications and repairs to existing facilities. Hatch personnel have had extensive experience in the construction management and supervision of marine works, which enables cost-effective design solutions to be developed.
