Suncor is developing the Wintering Hills wind power project near Drumheller, Alberta. The total installed capacity will be 88 MW, supplying power to the Alberta electric system. This will consist of 55 GE 1.6-MW XLE turbines.
A 5.5-km high-voltage power line (144 kV) will be built to interconnect with the ATCO Electric 804S substation.
The project will be constructed between January 2010 and December 2011. The civil works, including roads, lease preparation, foundations, and substation foundations, began in 2010. The underground collection system will began in 2010, with final terminations completed in 2011. The substation will be completed and the turbines will be installed and commissioned in 2011 as each turbine comes online.
Output of the individual wind turbines will be increased to 34 kV for collection in an underground cabling system. The cables will be routed to a project substation, with the voltage stepped up to 144 kV for delivery into the ATCO power grid at the interconnection tie point.
