The Wuskwatim generating station is under construction with an in-service-date of Q4 2011. The development will be
comprised of a 200-MW, three-unit hydroelectric generating station located on the Burntwood River at Taskinigup Falls.
It
will have a rated head of 21 m and be comprised of a close-coupled intake powerhouse, a three-bay spillway and earth
dams. The development will involve the flooding of less than 1/2 km2 of land to create the forebay.
KGS Acres, a Hatch affiliated company, is providing engineering services for the design and construction of the
200-MW Wuskwatim hydroelectric development.
KGS Acres’s scope of work includes:
- Preparation of designs, tender drawings and specifications for
- Construction camp and site infrastructure
- Civil works
- Gates and hoists
- Electrical and mechanical equipment
- Material listings for purchase of materials by the owner
- Review of fabricator’s drawings
- Assistance in scheduling and cost control
- Assistance during commissioning
- Preparation of operation and maintenance manuals
- Liaison during construction with review of site designs and advice on ongoing details
- Provision of construction management team staff
- Powerhouse containing three vertical shaft, fixed blade and propeller turbines rated at 70 MW under a net head of 21
m
- Turbine runners approximately 7 m in diameter
- Umbrella-type generators, each rated at 87.4 MVA at 0.85 power factor
- Powerhouse crane with a capacity of 240 Mg
- Nine fixed-roller vertical lift gates in three intake structures. Each gate is to be approximately 5 m wide by 12.8 m high
and will be equipped with a wire rope hoist
- Three-bay spillway with vertical lift gates, each 9 m wide by 13 m high, with a total design discharge of 2650 m3/s
- Approximately 120 000 m3 of concrete in the spillway, intake, powerhouse and auxiliary structures
• Excavation of 800 000 m3 of rock and 800 000 m3 of overburden
- Upstream channel improvements will be incorporated at the river’s outlet from Wuskwatim Lake
- Approximately 460,000 m3 of earth and rockfill for dams to contain the resevoir and control water during construction
- Construction camp to accommodate a workforce of approximately 800
- Construction of a 50-km long road for access to the site
- Award of Excellence and Keystone Award from Consulting Engineers of Manitoba, 2007
