
The Columbia River has a drainage area of about 250 000 mi
2, extending throughout the Pacific Northwest and into Canada. There are more than 250 reservoirs and around 150 hydroelectric projects in the basin, including 18 main stem dams on the Columbia.

The Panama Canal system consists of six locks which are operated using fresh water from two seasonal reservoirs: Lake Gatun and Madden Lake. Each reservoir includes a small power plant, 24 MW and 36 MW respectively, with a total of nine generating units.
