Comparison of Several Coal Gasification Processes
Authors: N. Seifkar, W. Davey, J. Sarvinis
8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (WCCE8), August 24, 2009

Abstract

Several coal gasification processes are discussed and compared in this study. The cases studied are pressurized entrained-flow slagging coal gasification processes and include: a dry-fed process with full water quench, a dry-fed process with partial quench using syngas, and a slurry-fed process with no quench. A brief process description is provided for each case and two different coals, Illinois #6 and Powder River Basin (PRB), are investigated to determine the effect of using different coals on each process. The advantages and
disadvantages of each process are discussed by comparing results from simulation models developed using AspenTech ApsenPlus® software. The sources of parasitic CO2 load for each process are identified and the total parasitic CO2 loads are determined and compared to other cases. Technical and economic issues involved with each process are also studied. The results show that each process has its own advantages and disadvantages for different applications such as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC), coal-to-liquids (CTL), and chemical synthesis. As such, each application must be carefully considered on a case by case basis.
