Abstract
A colleague once related how, immediately following a one-point, last second loss by his college football team, his father put his arm around the colleague’s shoulder and referred to the event as, “a character building experience.” While well intentioned, the father’s wisdom was of little consolation. Likewise, the enormous amount of character currently amassing in the North American steel industry does not offset the anguish of managers, employees, and investors embroiled in dire circumstances.
